What is a PEACEMAKER?

_________________

Peace does not mean total harmony among people or the absence of disagreements.  A peacemaker brings certain characteristics to disagreements that make room for resolution and creation of harmony.

It can take immense willingness and courage to be a Peacemaker . . . willingness and courage to:

  • communicate directly with all parties.

  • respect all parties.

  • set aside feelings of superiority and the need for power; avoid righteousness.

  • avoid taking differences personally and allow oneself to feel uncomfortable.

  • honor the truth over what one would rather believe and/or what's popular.

  • understand before being understood . . . listen to and hear what others say.

  • imagine how the other person feels and empathize with the cause of their feelings.

  • speak honestly about their thoughts and feelings . . . say difficult things.

  • ask for what one wants.

  • accept the other person's point of view although one may not agree (agree to disagree).

  • appreciate differences.

  • seek a win-win outcome.

  • compromise, forgive and smile!

Are YOU a Peacemaker?
