Coronado Human Relations Commiss

PEACEMAKERS:

Each year, the CHRC honors eight Coronado citizens who have made significant contributions to peace in human relationships by valuing, modeling, and promoting peaceful communication and conflict resolution. Nominations are accepted for eight categories: Business, Community Leader, Education, Faith, Health & Human Services, Military, and Youth - Elementary and High School.

Nominations are accepted each year early in the spring. A select committee of the Commission then chooses winners from among the nominees. Awards are presented during "Take My Hand, Coronado!" week at the "Evening Celebration of Peace in Human Relationships".

Following are our 2008 Honorees:

Business: An individual from the business community in Coronado who has substantially and verifiably contributed to improving communication and to the peaceful resolution of conflict within the business community. (Sponsored by The Coronado Chamber of Commerce)

Community Leader: An individual from a non-profit, community-based organization or a local public agency, who has dedicated substantial effort with verifiable results toward both improving communication and the peaceful resolution of conflict in Coronado. (Sponsored by The Rotary Club of Coronado)

What is a PEACEMAKER?

Peace does not mean total harmony among people or the absence of disagreements. A peacemaker brings certain characteristics to disagreements that make room for resolution and creation of harmony.

It can take immense willingness and courage to be a Peacemaker . . . willingness and courage to:

communicate directly with all
parties.
respect all parties.
set aside feelings of
superiority and the need for
power; avoid righteousness.
avoid taking differences
personally and allow oneself
to feel uncomfortable.
honor the truth over what one
would rather believe and/or
what's popular.
understand before being
understood . . . listen to and
hear what others say.
imagine how the other person
feels and empathize with the
cause of their feelings.
speak honestly about their
thoughts and feelings . . .
say difficult things.
ask for what one wants.
accept the other person's point
of view although one may not
agree (agree to disagree).
appreciate differences.
seek a win-win outcome.
compromise, forgive and smile!
